The Barcelona star was talked out of international retirement after the summer's Copa America heartbreak and made the difference in World Cup qualifying
Match-winner Messi apologised post-match for appearing to quit international football after the disappointment of losing the Copa America final on penalties to Chile in July.
"I wanted to be here after all the confusion I'd caused by first saying I wasn't coming and then that I was," Messi told reporters.
"From the moment I said that, the fans showed me a lot of affection and I'm really grateful, I couldn't not come back."
Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker led the praise as he tweeted: "Messi is so good, he even scores after he retires".
